What size center drill should I use?

You should use a large enough center drill so that the tip of your drill can “find” the hole and start cutting. Generally, this means using the largest center drill you can without interfering with the hole you’re planning to drill (ie, not bigger than the diameter of hole you plan to drill, unless you hope to also use the center drill to countersink the hole.
